2023 marks the 150th anniversary of the death of Alessandro Manzoni, one of the most important writers in Italian literature. The Vatican State Mint is celebrating this anniversary by issuing a bi-metallic ?2 coin (in both the BU and BE versions). The ?2 coin is designed by artist Gabriella Titotto and depicts Manzoni's portrait in the centre, with his signature underneath; on the right, behind the inkwell and quill, are the first words of his famous historical novel "I Promessi Sposi" (The Betrothed). On the left, a laurel branch testifies to the enduring fame of the great writer.

Edge: striated and inscribed with a 2 followed by two stars, repeated six times, alternating right side up and down.
