Description
The Netherlands 2021 BU Euro coin set is dedicated to the city of Utrecht, one of the oldest and most important cities in the Netherlands. This annual set represents the official issue of the Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) coin series for the year 2021, struck by the Royal Dutch Mint.
Brilliant Uncirculated quality denotes a higher standard of striking than regular circulation coins, guaranteeing pieces with sharp and precise relief, as well as a carefully finished appearance resulting from a rigorous manufacturing process. The coins contained in this set were not intended for ordinary monetary circulation, which preserves their original condition.
This set brings together all Dutch euro coins from 1 cent to 2 euros dated 2021. The series thus includes the eight standard denominations of the eurozone, each featuring on the reverse the common European designs and, on the obverse, the official portrait of King Willem-Alexander, sovereign of the Netherlands, in accordance with the minting rules in force for coins of the Dutch monarchy.
The theme chosen for this edition highlights Utrecht, an iconic city in the centre of the Netherlands, known in particular for its Gothic cathedral whose Dom Tower is one of the most recognisable monuments in the country. Utrecht is also a major university city, endowed with a rich historical and architectural heritage, making it an ideal subject to illustrate Dutch cultural identity.
The mintage of this set is limited to 12,500 copies, making it a restricted-distribution issue. This relatively low figure gives this set a rare character within the official Dutch numismatic production of the year 2021.
