Michelangelo Merisi was born in 1571 and died in 1610. He was called "Caravaggio" after a small town in the province of Bergamo where he lived as a child. His pictorial work is one of the highest expressions of art of all time, deeply moving and exciting. To celebrate the 450th anniversary of his birth, the Vatican City State Monetary Institute has produced a two-euro coin in the double version BU and BE, engraved by the artist Chiara Principe. The image on the coin depicts the painting entitled "Boy with a basket of fruit" by Caravaggio in 1593, which is on display in the Borghese Gallery in Rome. Caravaggio produced this painting during his first stay in Rome after working as an apprentice in the shop of Simone Peterzano. The work, although still in its youth, is already extraordinary in its analytical precision and its sensitivity to naturalistic observations, which evoke the life of the fruit represented in the basket.
Edge: striated and inscribed with a 2 followed by two stars, all repeated six times, alternating right side and left side.
