The Vatican celebrates the centenary of the Marian apparitions witnessed near Alju-strel by three young shepherds from the small village of Fatima in Portugal: Lucie dos Santos, 10 years old, and her cousins François and Jacinthe Marto, aged 9 and 7 respectively.
One day, as they were playing in the clearing of Cova da Iria, where they had taken their sheep to graze, they saw appearing to them "a beautiful lady radiating a dazzling light" who introduced herself to them as the Virgin of the Rosary. After the first apparition, the woman urged the three children to appear in the same place on the thirteenth day of the following month, and so for 5 other meetings from May 13 to October 13, revealing a series of historical events that would take place in the years that followed. In 1930, the Catholic Church recognized the supernatural character of the apparitions by authorizing worship, and a sanctuary was erected in Fatima, where Pope Francis went on May 12 and 13, 2017.
