The Vatican is celebrating the centenary of the Marian apparitions witnessed by three young shepherds, Lucia dos Santos aged 10 and her cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto aged 9 and 7 respectively, in the vicinity of Alju-strel, part of the small village of Fatima in Portugal.
One day, as they were playing in the clearing at Cova da Iria where they had taken their sheep to graze, they saw "a beautiful lady emanating a dazzling light" who appeared to them as Our Lady of the Rosary. After the first apparition, the woman urged the three children to appear again in the same place on the thirteenth day of the following month, and so on for 5 more meetings between 13 May and 13 October, revealing a series of historical events that would take place over the following years. In 1930 the Catholic Church recognised the supernatural nature of the apparitions, authorising worship, and a shrine was erected at Fatima, where Pope Francis visited on 12 and 13 May 2017.
