The Vatican 2 euro commemorative coin, issued in 2016, is dedicated to the Jubilee of Mercy, also celebrating the 50th anniversary of the closing of Vatican Council II, which took place from December 8, 2015 to November 20, 2016.
The national face of this coin depicts Saint Martin of Tours, illustrated in the act of sharing his cloak with a needy person. The image is surrounded by the semicircular inscription "GIUBILEO DELLA MISERICORDIA" on the left side and "CITTÀ DEL VATICANO" on the right side. The year of issue, "2016", is inscribed on the right side of the coin. The mint mark "R" and the artist's name, "M. CRISCIOTTI", are shown at the bottom.
The reverse of the coin features a map of the European continent. This map is superimposed on a dynamic background composed of the twelve stars of the European Union. The inscription "2 EURO" is also present on this face, accompanied by the engraver's initials, "LL".
This bimetallic coin weighs 8.5 grams and has a diameter of 25.75 millimeters. Its edge is finely milled and bears the inscription "2 *", repeated six times, with alternating orientation from bottom to top and top to bottom.
The mintage of this commemorative coin is limited to 80,000 copies, all struck in BU (Brilliant Uncirculated) quality. The engravers of this coin are Mariangela Crisciotti and Claudia Momoni for the obverse, and Luc Luycx for the reverse.
