This 2 euro commemorative coin was issued by the Vatican in 2013 to commemorate the 28th World Youth Day (WYD) held in Rio de Janeiro. The event took place from July 23 to 28, 2013.
The coin is bimetallic, with a cupronickel center and a brass-nickel crown. It weighs 8.5 grams and its diameter is 25.75 millimeters. The edge is reeded and bears the inscription "2" followed by two stars, repeated six times alternately upright and inverted.
The central theme of WYD Rio was the exhortation "Go and make disciples of all nations", taken from the Gospel of Matthew (Mt 28:19). This theme emphasized the importance of evangelization and sharing the faith, especially among young people.
The coin is presented in its official blister pack, guaranteeing its uncirculated (UNC) condition. The mintage of this commemorative edition is limited to 94,000 copies.
The 28th WYD brought together more than two million young people in Rio de Janeiro, with Christ the Redeemer as the central symbol of the event. Pope Francis was present to welcome young people from around the world, pray and share with them. This event highlighted the importance of young people in the Church and their role in renewing its universal mission.
