 The objective of the European Year of Cultural Heritage is to encourage as many people as possible to discover and engage with Europe's cultural heritage, and to strengthen their sense of belonging to a common European space. The Year was marked by a series of initiatives and events organised throughout Europe to enable citizens to get closer to their cultural heritage and learn more about it. The coin celebrating this event represents a detail of Caravaggio's famous work "Supper at Emmaus" (1605 - 1606), kept at the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan. The painting is characterised by a profound intimacy and chromatic essentiality, as well as by a dramatic and theatrical use of light, which emphasizes the sacredness of the moment represented.
