This 2 euro commemorative coin was issued by San Marino in 2017, in tribute to the 750th anniversary of the birth of Giotto di Bondone, Italian sculptor and painter born in 1267. The coin is bi-metallic, weighing 8.5 grams and with a diameter of 25.75 millimeters.
The obverse of the coin features a detail of the bell tower of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence, an architectural work by Giotto. There are also the vertical inscriptions "SAN MARINO", "GIOTTO" and the dates "1267-2017". A detail of Giotto's portrait and the initials of the author Luciana De Simoni, "LDS", are visible on the right. The letter "R", representing the mint mark of the Zecca de Rome, is located at the bottom. The twelve stars of the European flag are arranged on the outer ring.
The reverse of the coin features a map of the European continent, represented on a dynamic background composed of the twelve stars of the European Union. The face value "2 EURO" is also indicated, accompanied by the initials "LL" of the engraver Luc Luycx.
The edge of the coin has a fine milled edge, with the inscription "2 * " repeated six times, oriented alternately from bottom to top and top to bottom.
Giotto di Bondone, a student of Cimabue, is considered one of the main Italian painters. He initiated a new style in Italian visual art and became a reference for Renaissance artists. Among his most famous masterpieces are the cycle of frescoes of the Life of Saint Francis for the Basilica of Assisi, the Crucifixion for the church of Santa Maria Novella in Florence, as well as the frescoes of the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua and the Basilica Santa Croce in Florence. Giotto was also a renowned architect, having been appointed chief architect of the Florence dome and having built the bell tower that bears his name. The mintage of this commemorative coin is 70,500 copies.
