This 2 euro commemorative coin, issued by San Marino in 2006, marks the 500th anniversary of the death of Christopher Columbus. The coin is made of bimetal, with a weight of 8.5 grams and a diameter of 25.75 millimeters.
The obverse of the coin features the twelve stars of the European community arranged in a circle in its outer part. The heart of the coin features a representation of the bust of Christopher Columbus, with an engraving of the three emblematic ships of his first voyage to the Indies in the background. Above the bust, the name of the issuing state, "SAN MARINO", can be read. Around Columbus's face are the "R" of the Rome mint, the commemorative dates "1506" and "2006", as well as the initials "LDS" of the engraver, Luciana De Simoni.
The reverse of the coin depicts a stylized map of the fifteen member states of the European Union at the time, appearing welded together. This map is superimposed on a dynamic background composed of the twelve stars of the European Union. The face value of the coin, "2 EURO", is also indicated on this side. The initials "LL" of the engraver Luc Luycx are present.
The edge of the coin is finely reeded and bears the inscription "2 *", repeated six times. The orientation of this inscription alternates between bottom to top and top to bottom.
