To create the world's first (physical) coin designed by artificial intelligence, the Portuguese Mint teamed up with the University of Coimbra's Centre for Informatics and Systems (CISUC), a leading institution in the field of informatics. For the first time in the history of Portuguese coinage, artificial intelligence (AI) will play a role in the design of a coin. This pioneering experiment aims to illustrate a reality in which the biological and the digital are inseparable. One side of the coin - the reverse - is designed by AI for humans, the other side - the obverse - is designed by humans for machines. The side created by the AI will be what it "thinks" is a valid representation for a human of a "coin in the digital world". The side drawn by the human will be the code needed by the AI to reproduce the other side. In other words, although they look different, the content of the two sides is identical and it is technically possible to convert one into the other.
