Description

This commemorative 2 euro coin was issued by Portugal in 2020 to celebrate the 730th anniversary of the University of Coimbra, one of the oldest universities in Europe, founded in 1290. The institution, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2013, is a major symbol of Portugal's intellectual and cultural history.

The coin is struck in bimetallic composition, in accordance with the standard for commemorative 2 euro coins in circulation within the eurozone. It has a diameter of 25.75 mm and a weight of 8.5 grams. Its bimetallic structure consists of a central cupro-nickel alloy insert surrounded by a peripheral ring in brass alloy, giving the coin its characteristic golden hue around the edge.

The reverse of the coin, common to all 2 euro coins in the eurozone, depicts the map of Europe. The obverse, specific to this Portuguese issue, features emblematic elements related to the University of Coimbra, an institution whose architectural and academic prestige is globally recognised. The face value of 2 euros and the year of issue are also engraved on it.

This issue is produced in BU (Brilliant Uncirculated) quality, meaning the coins are struck with particular care and present a state of preservation superior to that of coins intended for general circulation. The reliefs are sharp and the surfaces retain their original brilliance.

The mintage is limited to 5,000 pieces, making it a particularly exclusive issue in the context of worldwide numismatic production. This relative rarity is an objective factor that distinguishes this coin from commemorative issues with higher mintages produced by other eurozone member states.
