The Vatican 2 euro commemorative coin, issued in 2018, celebrates the European Year of Cultural Heritage. This coin features a bimetallic composition, with a weight of 8.5 grams and a diameter of 25.75 millimeters.
The obverse of the coin highlights a representation of the ancient sculpture of Laocoön and his sons, an emblematic work preserved within the Vatican Museums. Below this artistic representation, you will find the inscription "Città del VATICANO", identifying the issuing state. The inscription "ANNO EUROPEO DEL PATRIMONIO CULTURALE" is arranged in a semicircle on the upper part of the obverse, emphasizing the commemorative theme of the coin. The year of issue, "2018", as well as the mint mark "R", are visible at the top right. The artist's name, "D. LONGO", is engraved at the bottom right.
The reverse of the coin features a stylized map of the European continent, against a dynamic background formed by the twelve stars of the European Union. The face value, "2 EURO", is clearly indicated. The engraver's initials, "LL", are also present on this face.
The edge of the coin is finely reeded and bears the inscription "2 *", repeated six times, with alternating bottom-to-top and top-to-bottom orientation. The coin's title is bimetallic. This commemorative coin highlights the importance of European cultural heritage and its preservation.
