The 5 centime coin from Monaco, dated 1978, features distinct characteristics on both sides. Struck in cupro-aluminum, it weighs 2 grams and has a diameter of 17 millimeters.
The obverse of the coin bears the bust of Prince Rainier III, facing right. The circular legend mentions "RAINIER III PRINCE DE MONACO", followed by the signature "SIMON" of the engraver Georges Simon and the year of issue, 1978. The edge of the coin is smooth.
The reverse of the coin depicts a monk knight, an emblematic figure holding a sword and protecting the crowned Grimaldi coat of arms. The inscription "DEO JUVANTE", meaning "With God's help", appears in an arc above the central motif. The face value "5" and the unit "CENTIMES" are also present on this face.
Georges Simon is credited as the engraver of this face as well. The coin was struck at the Paris Mint. The total mintage for this year is 75,000 copies.
