This 2 euro commemorative coin was issued by Monaco in 2012 to mark the 500th anniversary of the foundation of Monaco's sovereignty (1512-2012). The coin is struck in bimetal, with a weight of 8.5 grams and a diameter of 25.75 millimeters.
The obverse of the coin features a portrait of Lucien 1st Grimaldi, in profile and facing left. Around the portrait, the inscription "1512 SOUVERAINETÉ DE MONACO 2012" can be read, as well as the name "LUCIEN 1er". The engraver of this side is Robert Prat. The inscriptions are in Latin.
The reverse of the coin depicts a map of the European continent. This map is placed on a dynamic background composed of the twelve stars symbolizing the European Union. The face value of "2 EURO" is also indicated, accompanied by the initials of the engraver Luc Luycx, "LL". The inscription is in Latin.
The edge of the coin is finely milled and bears the inscription "2 **" repeated six times. These inscriptions are alternately oriented upright and upside down.
This commemorative coin highlights an important historical event for Monaco, namely the 500th anniversary of its sovereignty. Lucien 1st Grimaldi, whose portrait appears on the obverse, is a prominent figure in Monegasque history.
