Description

This commemorative 2 euro coin is issued by the Principality of Monaco in 2026 and celebrates the Duchy of Valentinois, a historic title closely linked to the princely house of Monaco. The Duchy of Valentinois was granted to the Grimaldi family in 1642 by King Louis XIII of France, thereby conferring upon its holders the rank of Duke and Peer of France. This title, still held by the Prince of Monaco, represents one of the most significant historical ties between Monaco and France.

The coin is struck in Proof quality (BE), which corresponds to the highest level of numismatic minting. This process guarantees sharp and precise reliefs, perfectly mirror-polished fields, and exceptionally fine details, clearly distinguishing these pieces from coins intended for general circulation.

From a technical standpoint, this coin is made in bimetallic composition, in accordance with current European standards for 2 euro coins. It has a diameter of 25.75 mm and a weight of 8.5 grams, characteristics common to all coins of this denomination within the eurozone. The bimetallic composition combines an outer ring and a central insert made of distinct alloys, a technical feature recognizable to the naked eye by the difference in colour between the two parts.

The mintage is limited to 15,000 pieces, making it a restricted-issue release, a hallmark of Monegasque productions that stand out for their particularly low mintage volumes within the eurozone. Monaco is indeed among the member states with the lowest mintages for their commemorative issues, which gives each of its coins an intrinsic rarity within numismatic collections dedicated to European commemorative 2 euro coins.
