The Duchy of Valentinois was granted to the Grimaldi family in 1642 by King Louis XIII of France, thereby conferring upon its holders the rank of Duke and Peer of France. This title, still held by the Prince of Monaco, represents one of the most significant historical ties between Monaco and France.
