Description
The 2020 Netherlands euro series is dedicated to the city of Rotterdam, the country's second-largest city and one of the most important ports in Europe. This numismatic issue was produced in 2020 and is distinguished by a limited mintage of 17,500 copies, making it a relatively rare piece in the landscape of Dutch coin production.
Rotterdam is an iconic Dutch metropolis, renowned for its bold contemporary architecture, its world-famous port, and its economic and cultural dynamism. The city was largely rebuilt after the Second World War, giving it a unique architectural identity in Europe, marked by modern and avant-garde achievements. These characteristics make Rotterdam an ideal subject to feature in a numismatic series dedicated to the great cities of the Netherlands.
The annual euro series of the Netherlands are produced by the Royal Dutch Mint (Koninklijke Nederlandse Munt), an institution founded in 1567 and based in Utrecht. These series bring together all euro denominations in circulation, from 1 cent to 2 euros, presented in a box or coherent set, thus providing a complete overview of the country's current coinage for the year in question.
The reverse of Dutch coins features, for the majority of denominations, the portrait of King Willem-Alexander, sovereign of the Netherlands since 2013, whose effigy was gradually introduced onto the national coinage from that date onwards. The coins also comply with the technical and graphic standards common to the euro area, while retaining the national specificities required on the national side of each coin.
With only 17,500 examples struck, this series dedicated to Rotterdam is part of a restricted production, characteristic of issues intended for collectors rather than for general circulation.
