Description
This commemorative 2 euro coin was issued in 2018 by the Republic of San Marino to mark the 420th anniversary of the birth of Gian Lorenzo Bernini, one of the most influential artists of the Italian Baroque, born in 1598. Sculptor, architect and painter, Bernini is notably responsible for the colonnade of St. Peter's Square in Rome and the baldachin of St. Peter's Basilica, among his most iconic works.
The obverse of the coin features a portrait or a work related to Gian Lorenzo Bernini, accompanied by inscriptions specific to the commemorative issue, including the mention of San Marino as the issuing state and the year 2018. The common European reverse displays the face value of 2 euros with the map of the European Union in the background, in accordance with the standard for euro coins issued after 2007.
The coin is made of bimetal, according to the technical specifications common to all 2 euro coins in circulation in the eurozone. It has a diameter of 25.75 mm and a weight of 8.5 grams. The edge of the coin is finely milled with the alternating inscription characteristic of 2 euro coins.
This issue was produced in a quantity of 60,500 units, making it a relatively limited mintage, characteristic of San Marino's commemorative issues. San Marino is a small landlocked state within the Italian peninsula with a special monetary status that allows it to mint its own euros while not being a member of the European Union. The face value of the coin is 2 euros, giving it legal tender status in all eurozone countries.
