The majestic golden eagle fights against the dangerous and vicious serpent, the symbol of temptation. The confrontation between Europe's most powerful eagle and the reptile takes place against a backdrop of waves. These waves refer to the Mediterranean Sea, on which Malta is located.
The reverse of the €5 coin features the effigy of Malta, placed on a crown inspired by a painting on the ceiling of the Grand Master's Palace in Valletta. The whole is surrounded by olive and palm branches, a symbol of peace. The fleur-de-lys evoke majesty and glory, while the roses are an attribute of purity and harmony. It is also the first piece to bear the Germania Mint hallmark.
