He stopped the Sun, moved the Earth
To celebrate the 550th anniversary of the birth of Poland's most famous astronomer, Malta is issuing this unique coin in partnership with Germania Mint with an edition of 15,000.
Nicolaus Copernicus launched a scientific revolution. His most important achievement was the heliocentric theory, which asserted that the Earth and the other planets revolved around the Sun, and not vice versa, as was believed at the time. Copernicus published this theory in his work entitled "De revolutionibus orbium coelestium" (On the revolutions of the celestial spheres).
The obverse of the coin depicts the figure of the illustrious scientist looking towards the Sun. The reverse shows the entire solar system as it was known in the 16th century, the coat of arms of the Central Bank of Malta and the mint mark of Germania Mint. The author of the coin is Natalia Danysz.
