The Hill of Crosses is a place of pilgrimage near the town of Šiauliai in northern Lithuania. The first crosses were placed on the fortified hill in the 14th century. Over the years, many crosses, crucifixes, sculptures of Lithuanian patriots, statues of the Virgin Mary, pewter effigies and rosaries have been brought there by Catholic pilgrims. It is estimated that there are almost 150,000 crosses on the hill. Pope John Paul II celebrated a mass there in 1993.
