The IPZS highlights Italian excellence by offering a coin dedicated to an Italian delicacy that has conquered the world: Nutella
On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Ferrero Group, the Istituto Poligrafico dello Stato (IPZS), the Italian Mint, issued three versions of a coin dedicated to the flagship product of the food group: Nutella. Founded after the war by Pietro Ferrero in Alba, in Piedmont, Ferrero first produced a kind of hard paste made from hazelnuts and a little chocolate. At the time, chocolate was scarce and hazelnuts were grown by local farmers. Legend has it that during the scorching summer of 1949, Michele, Pietro's son, began selling this product which could not withstand the heat and became soft. He therefore packaged it in small glass jars. Following its success, the recipe was adapted with the addition of cocoa butter so that the texture would not harden. Called "Gianduja" and then "Supercrema", the spread took the name "Nutella" in 1964 as international sales expanded.
To illustrate these coins, the IPZS highlights the traditional jar containing the spread. The difference between each version lies in the colour of the jar's lid. The colours (green, white, red) reflect those of the Italian flag. On the reverse, behind the face value of 5 euros, the entrance to Ferrero's historic factory in Alba can be seen. Each version is produced in 15,000 copies, with 10,000 intended for individual blister packs and 5,000 grouped in a set. Each coin is made of 925 ? silver and weighs 18 g with a diameter of 32 millimetres.
