Description
This 2 euro commemorative coin, issued by Italy in 2026, marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Carlo Collodi and pays tribute to his iconic work, Pinocchio. Struck in BU (Brilliant Uncirculated) quality, it is composed of two distinct metals. It weighs 8.5 grams and measures 25.75 millimeters in diameter. The mintage is limited to 10,000 copies.
The coin's obverse features a representation of Pinocchio dancing, a central figure in Collodi's tale, 'Pinocchio ? The Story of a Puppet.' Pinocchio's shadow, visible on the right, watches with astonishment as the talking cricket perches on his nose, which grows longer with each lie. The upper part of the coin bears the inscription 'CARLO COLLODI,' as well as the date of commemoration and the dates '1826' and '2026,' framing the commemorated event.
The mint mark of the Rome Mint, represented by the letter 'R,' is visible on the left. The country code 'RI' identifying Italy, is located on the right. The name 'PINOCCHIO' is inscribed in the lower part of the coin, while the initials 'MB' of the coin's creator, Marta Bonifacio, appear in the lower right. The coin's edge is adorned with the twelve stars, symbol of the European flag. This coin will be legal tender in Italy from January 1, 2026.
