Evgenios Spatharis was born in Kifissia north of Athens on 3 January 1924 and died in Athens on 9 May 2009. He was a Greek puppeteer specialising in Karaghiosis.
Karaghiosis is the central character of the Greek and Turkish shadow theatre to which he gave his name, which comes from the Turkish Karagöz meaning black eye. He represents a Greek living in the Ottoman Empire. He lives in poverty in a shack, walks barefoot and lives opposite the vizier's palace. By extension, Karaghiósis refers to all shadow theatre.
