Fred, a lieutenant in the Royal Winnipeg Rifles, is part of the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division that landed on Sword Beach. His unit continues the Battle of Normandy, fighting in Caen and Falaise. The division then heads for the Seine and liberates Rouen on August 30, 1944. It continues its route in France, liberating Boulogne-sur-Mer and Calais. The unit is then sent to Belgium and the Netherlands, where it participates in the Battle of the Scheldt and the Breskens pocket, allowing the reopening of the port of Antwerp. It ends the war in Germany after preparing the assault on the town of Aurich.
The reverse of this coin highlights all the Allied countries that officially participated in the Normandy landings, surrounding the face value and the RF mention. Clockwise: Free France, Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Australia, United States, Norway, United Kingdom, Czechoslovakia, Canada, Belgium. The stars under the flags are also a tribute to the "Way of Freedom", kilometer markers marking the route followed by the 3rd American Army for the liberation of France to Luxembourg.
