The great wealth of pictorial art in France over several centuries was an opportunity for Monnaie de Paris to start a new series that pays tribute to the greatest of the masterpieces in our museums. The different currents and influences - Renaissance Baroque Impressionism... - are celebrated. Each year, several works will be honoured. In 2023, Delacroix's Liberty Guiding the People, Kitagawa's Young Girl Blowing into a Glass Pipe and Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun's Marie-Antoinette with a Rose will be honoured.
The front depicts one of Eugène Delacroix's most famous works, Liberty Guiding the People, painted in 1830, depicting Marianne brandishing the French flag. This coin depicts the painting in its entirety. The "museum masterpieces" stamp, which is the hallmark of the coins in this series, has been added to the top right-hand corner and blends in with the painting. The name of the work, the artist and the year 2023 complete the background to the painting. The special feature of this coin is that it is coloured.
The reverse is common to the series and features a mixture of views from several major French museums.
