This numismatic series includes the eight euro coin denominations issued by France in 2000, ranging from 1 cent to 2 euros. Each coin has a common face, standardized for all countries in the euro zone, and a national face specific to France.
The 1, 2 and 5 cent coins are struck in copper-plated steel. Their color is copper red. The motif of the national face represents the portrait of a young Marianne, symbol of the French Republic, whose design is the work of Fabienne Courtiade.
The 10, 20 and 50 cent coins are made of "Nordic gold" alloy, a golden yellow alloy. The national face of these coins features the theme of the sower, a traditional French allegorical figure, revisited by Laurent Jorio.
The 1 and 2 euro coins are bimetallic. The 1 euro coin is composed of a cupronickel center and a maillechort ring. The 2 euro coin consists of a maillechort center and a cupronickel ring. The design of the national face is a stylized tree, created by Joaquin Jimenez, surrounded by the French motto "Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité". The twelve stars of the European flag are also present.
The year of issue, 2000, appears on each coin, integrated into the design of the national face. All the coins in this series feature the mint mark of the Monnaie de Paris.
