The 2001 BU set ? circulating coins is one of the very first numismatic sets issued as part of the introduction of the euro currency. Produced on the occasion of the historic transition to the single currency, this set brings together all the French euro coins in their version intended for circulation, but presented in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) quality. It is thus a direct testimony to a pivotal moment in European monetary history.
The year 2001 is particularly important, as it immediately precedes the effective circulation of the euro in January 2002. The coins contained in this set were not yet used on a daily basis at the time of their issue, which gives this set both an anticipatory and symbolic dimension. It is therefore an object on the border between circulating currency and a collector's item.
The series includes the 8 French euro values, ranging from 1 cent to 2 euros, each minted according to official standards but with a superior finish. The national faces illustrate the great symbols of the French Republic: the modern Sower for the cents, the stylized tree for the intermediate values, and the motif of the Republic for the higher denominations. The set forms a coherent composition, designed to embody the values and identity of France within the euro area.
From a technical point of view, the Brilliant Uncirculated quality is distinguished by careful minting, offering clear reliefs and homogeneous surfaces, far superior to those of coins intended for classic circulation. The coins are generally protected in a sealed box or blister, avoiding any alteration related to handling. This presentation guarantees optimal preservation and enhances the attractiveness of the set to collectors.
From a historical point of view, this set is part of the broader context of the transition to the euro, which was realized after several years of preparation at the European level. It testifies to the transition between the old national currencies, such as the French franc, and a common currency intended to unify the economies of several countries. As such, it goes beyond the simple numismatic framework to become a true object of economic and political memory.
