Theme: 400 years of Jean de la Fontaine
Series: L'Art de la Plume

In 2021 the Monnaie de Paris is inaugurating a new series based around literary styles and authors who have marked the history of literature in France and abroad. Each year, a different literary style will be highlighted, including poetry, novels, philosophical essays and plays. A French author and a foreign author who have left their mark on the literary style in the spotlight that year will then be celebrated.
On this side, the engraving workshop of the Monnaie de Paris has depicted the portrait of Jean de la Fontaine from the front.
The best-known animals from his fables are represented: the raven and the fox, the ant, the wolf and the lamb, and finally the hare and the tortoise, encircling his face.
His name and the dates of his birth and death are engraved on the right of the decoration. The words 400 years refer to the commemoration in 2021 of the 400th anniversary of his birth.
The reverse of this coin is the same as the reverse of all commemorative €Gold and €Silver coins minted by the Monnaie de Paris.
