The Elysée Treaty signed on 22 January 1963 by Charles de Gaulle and Konrad Adenauer sealed the reconciliation between France and the Federal Republic of Germany. It is considered to be one of the founding acts of cooperation between the two States. It also represents one of the key milestones in the process of building Europe. This coin celebrates the 50th anniversary of this treaty and the Franco-German friendship.
The portraits of Charles de Gaules and Konrad Adenauer, together with their signatures, appear on the front. As the design is shared by France and Germany, the inscription "Traité de l'Élysée 50 ans" is written in French and German. The reverse is that of the current €2 coin common to all the countries in the euro zone: the face value "2 euro" appears in front of the geographical map of Europe.
