The 2 euro coin, as designed by Sinikka Inkeroinen-Huhta and Ilkka Huhta, uses a door to symbolize state visits and diplomatic relations between nations. Behind the door, negotiations take place, relationships are forged and the future is built.
State visits have always been important for Finland with regard to diplomatic relations between states and the execution of foreign policy. Hundreds of years ago, state visits took the form of marriages between royal families, which could lead to military alliances and political decision-making. After the First World War, when many new nation states appeared in Europe, state visits took a new turn.
For a long time, the most important state visits took place in Moscow and Washington DC, but with Finland's accession to the EU, the major economic powers of Central and Eastern Europe have taken on greater importance. Finnish presidents have excellent opportunities to present the country's foreign policy, while opening the door to the export industry and cultural cooperation. Through these statements and appearances, Finnish Presidents represent, each in their own way, the values, principles and objectives of Finland and its culture. This is probably the most important function of state visits these days.
Edge: Reeded and inscribed with the inscription "Suomi Finland" followed by three lions.
