The 5 novos cruzados banknote, issued in 1989, pays tribute to Candido Portinari, an emblematic figure in Brazilian art. This banknote is part of the A-283 series.
On the obverse, the banknote features a portrait of Candido Torquato Portinari (1903-1962). To the left of the portrait, an engraving reproduces a final section of the "Tiradentes" panel, a monumental work completed in 1949. A triangular stamp, indicating the value of 5 novos cruzados, is also present. The inscriptions include: "5000", "BANCO CENTRAL DO BRASIL", "CASA DA MOEDA DO BRASIL", "5 CRUZADOS NOVOS", "PRESIDENTE DO CONSELHO MONETÁRIO NACIONAL", "PRESIDENTE DO BANCO CENTRAL DO BRASIL", "DEUS SEJA LOUVADO", "CÂNDIDO PORTINARI" and "5000 CINCO MIL CRUZADOS".
The reverse of the banknote features a photographic print of Portinari working on the "Baianas" panel. Another print evokes elements of the "Paz" panel, recalling scenes from the artist's childhood in Brodósqui (SP). The watermark reproduces the portrait of Candido Portinari.
The dimensions of this banknote are 154 mm in length and 74 mm in width.
