This Brazilian 50 Cruzados banknote, issued in 1986, pays tribute to Oswaldo Gonçalves Cruz and the institute named after him. The front of the banknote features a portrait of Oswaldo Gonçalves Cruz (1872-1917), an emblematic figure in Brazilian medicine. Next to him, a microscope evokes his scientific work and contributions to public health. The inscriptions "BANCO CENTRAL DO BRASIL 50 000" indicate the issuing institution and the face value. You can also read "OSWALDO CRUZ", as well as the mentions of the presidents of the National Monetary Council and the Banco Central do Brasil. The face value is repeated in words: "cinqüenta mil cruzeiros". The "CASA DA MOEDA DO BRASIL" attests to the establishment responsible for minting.
The back of the banknote depicts the main building of the Oswaldo Cruz Institute, located in Rio de Janeiro. The inscription "INSTITUTO OSWALDO CRUZ" clearly identifies the place represented. The face value "50 000" is repeated, accompanied by the mention "CINQÜENTA MIL CRUZEIROS". Zélio Bruno da Trindade is credited as the engraver of the obverse, while Júlio Pereira Guimarães is the designer. On the reverse, Dalila dos Santos Cerqueira Pinto is the engraver and Júlio Pereira Guimarães the designer. The banknote's watermark reproduces the portrait of Oswaldo Cruz. The banknote measures 154 mm in length and 74 mm in width.
