The Principality is issuing its BU (Brillant Universel) set containing the 8 euro denominations. The presentation image shows the back of the Casa de la Vall, where meetings of the Earth Council were held for several centuries. Andorra has decided to reduce the number of sets issued from 20,000 to 15,000. The valleys of Andorra have been governed since the 13th century jointly by the Bishop of Urgell and the Counts of Foix, who over the course of history passed on their power to the President of the French Republic. Legislative power is vested in the Conseil Général, which is the heir to the Conseil de la Terre.
The effigies were chosen by the Andorran people following a competition launched by the government.
- The 1, 2 and 5 cent coins feature an isard, the emblematic animal of the Pyrenean mountains, related to the chamois.
- The 10, 20 and 50 cent coins depict the Romanesque church of Santa Coloma.
- The 1 euro coin features the former Parliament of Andorra (Maison des Vallées).
- The 2 euro coin bears the Principality's coat of arms.
Brillant Universel stands for Brilliant Uncirculated. These coins are minted using new tools to ensure superior quality. They are more highly polished than standard coins and have never been put into circulation.
