To mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Karol Józef Wojty?a, the birth name of Pope John Paul II, numerous tributes are planned. The Vatican has decided to dedicate its first 2 euro commemorative coin of the year 2020 to this centenary.
This coin is announced with a mintage of 101,000 copies. It can be noted that the papal city has chosen to increase these print runs compared to previous vintages. The design represents Pope John Paul II, the house where he was born and the basilica near his house in Wadowice, Poland. In the upper left is the inscription in a semicircle «PAPA GIOVANNI PAOLO II». On the right are the years «1920 2020» and the mint mark «R» and at the bottom in a semicircle the name of the issuing country «CITTA? DEL VATICANO». Under the image of the basilica are the name of the artist «G. TITOTTO» and the initials of the engraver «M.A.C. INC» (Maria Angela Cassol engraver).
Edge: Reeded and inscribed with a 2 followed by two stars, all repeated six times alternating right side up and upside down.
