Milan Rastislav Štefánik was born on July 21, 1880 and died in a plane crash in Czechoslovakia on May 4, 1919. He was a Slovak astronomer, general politician and diplomat. He was one of the co-founders of the Czechoslovak Republic, whose cause he pleaded with the French authorities at the end of the First World War.
