The obverse of the coin features a portrait of Giuseppe Garibaldi in the central part, an emblematic figure of Italian unification and a major player in independence movements in Europe and Latin America. The letter "R", indicating the Rome mint, is positioned above Garibaldi's shoulder. The engraver's signature, "E.L.F.", for Ettore Lorenzo Frapiccini, is discreetly placed at eight o'clock, along the inner edge. The twelve stars of the European Community are arranged in a circle in the outer ring of the coin.
The reverse of the coin features a map representing the fifteen states of the European Union. This map is superimposed on a dynamic background composed of the twelve stars of the European Union.
