Description

This commemorative 2 euro coin was issued by Portugal in 2021 to mark the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Portugal held this rotating presidency during the first half of 2021, and it is within this major institutional context that this coin was released.

The coin is struck in Proof quality (BE), which corresponds to a superior striking quality, characterised by sharp reliefs and mirror-polished fields, offering a particularly refined visual finish. This level of quality is generally reserved for collector coins.

It features the standard bimetallic composition of 2 euro coins in circulation within the eurozone, with a cupronickel and steel alloy centre surrounded by an outer ring in golden-coloured Nordic gold alloy. Its diameter is 25.75 mm with a weight of 8.5 grams, in accordance with the harmonised technical specifications defined by the European Central Bank for all 2 euro coins.

The mintage is limited to 5,000 pieces, making it a particularly exclusive issue within the European commemorative series, further enhancing its rarity in the field of contemporary numismatics.

The common reverse of the coin, depicting the map of Europe and the face value of 2 euros, is identical to that of all 2 euro coins issued after 2007 by eurozone member states. The edge of the coin also features the inscriptions and stars characteristic of 2 euro coins, in accordance with European minting regulations.
