Description

This 50 dinar coin was issued by the Bank of Algeria in 2022 as a tribute to Hassiba Ben Bouali, an iconic figure of the Algerian War of Independence. A militant of the National Liberation Front, she became one of the most powerful symbols of Algerian resistance, having lost her life during the Battle of Algiers in 1957, at the age of nineteen.

The coin is made of bimetal, a manufacturing technique combining two distinct alloys, typically an outer ring and a centre of different metallic compositions. This process gives the coin a characteristic visual appearance with a clear contrast between the two zones. It has a diameter of 28.5 mm and a weight of 9.27 grams, dimensions that correspond to the usual standards for circulating coins of this face value in the Algerian monetary system.

The obverse of the coin traditionally features a portrait or visual evocation of Hassiba Ben Bouali, accompanied by inscriptions relating to her identity and the commemoration. The reverse bears the face value of 50 dinars along with the official inscriptions specific to Bank of Algeria issues, including the year of minting 2022.

This issue is part of an Algerian numismatic tradition that regularly honours the great figures of national history through circulation or commemorative coinage. The city of Algiers is the issuing institution of this coin, affiliated with the Bank of Algeria, the country's monetary authority. The Algerian dinar (DZD) has been the national monetary unit since the country's independence in 1962, and this 50-dinar coin represents a significant denomination in the range of coins in circulation.
