Description

This 2 dollar coin is issued by the Royal Canadian Mint of Ottawa in 2026 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the CN Tower, Toronto's architectural landmark and a powerful symbol of Canadian identity. Inaugurated in 1976, this communications and observation tower remains one of the tallest free-standing structures in the world, making it a particularly meaningful subject of commemoration in Canadian history.

The obverse of the coin features the official portrait of King Charles III, sovereign of Canada, whose effigy is reproduced in accordance with the numismatic standards in force for contemporary Canadian issues.

The coin features a bimetallic construction, a characteristic unique to Canadian 2 dollar coins since their introduction in 1996. This assembly technique combines two distinct alloys within a single strike, with a central insert and an outer ring of different metallic compositions. This process gives the coin a distinctive visual aesthetic while providing additional security properties against counterfeiting.

From a technical standpoint, the coin has a diameter of 28 millimetres and a weight of 6.99 grams, dimensions identical to those of the standard Canadian circulating 2 dollar coin. These physical characteristics are in keeping with the Canadian current series, while being distinguished by its commemorative reverse dedicated to this anniversary.

This issue is part of the Royal Canadian Mint's tradition of celebrating major milestones in national history through commemorative strikes integrated into the circulating format, thus making coins with both a heritage and commemorative purpose accessible, without breaking away from standard monetary formats.
