Description

This 100 dinars coin was issued by the Bank of Algeria in 2021, to commemorate Ali Ammar, better known as Ali la Pointe, an iconic figure of the Algerian resistance during the war of independence. It follows the Algerian numismatic tradition of paying tribute to personalities who have left their mark on national history.

The coin is made of bimetal, a technique characterised by the combination of two distinct alloys, typically an outer ring and a central core of different compositions. This process gives the coin a distinctive aesthetic with a visual contrast between the two metallic zones, while also enhancing its resistance to counterfeiting.

Its diameter of 29.5 mm makes it a medium-sized coin, pleasant to handle, while its weight of 11 grams gives it a satisfying density in the hand, characteristic of bimetallic strikes of this generation.

The obverse of the coin generally features the portrait or a symbolic representation of Ali Ammar, surrounded by inscriptions relating to his designation and the Algerian State. The reverse bears the face value of 100 dinars, accompanied by the usual institutional references, including the name of the country and the year of minting 2021.

This issue is part of a series of Algerian commemorative coins intended to perpetuate the memory of those who played a role in the national liberation war. Ali Ammar, born in 1930 and killed in 1957 during the Battle of Algiers, is a central figure in the struggle for Algerian independence, which fully justifies his effigy on this official currency struck under the authority of the Bank of Algeria, headquartered in Algiers.
