Description

This 100 dinars coin was issued by Algeria between 2018 and 2020 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the launch of the first Algerian satellite. It is part of a commemorative series marking the major scientific and technological achievements of the Algerian nation.

The coin is made of bimetal, a minting technique combining two distinct metal alloys, generally consisting of an outer ring and a central insert of different compositions. This process gives the coin a contrasted visual appearance and also serves as an additional security element against counterfeiting.

With a diameter of 29.5 mm and a weight of 11 grams, this coin features dimensions typical of standard circulation or commemorative coins. These technical specifications reflect careful manufacturing in accordance with current standards in monetary production.

The theme depicted on this issue refers to the Algerian space programme, and more specifically to the Alsat-1 satellite, the first Algerian satellite placed in orbit on 28 November 2002, whose symbolic fiftieth anniversary is commemorated here as part of a retrospective on the country's technological advances. Algeria developed its space programme under the aegis of the Algerian Space Agency (ASAL), founded in 2002, with this satellite having been designed as part of an international cooperation effort.

The choice of the face value of 100 dinars, combined with the bimetallic technique and the commemorative theme, places this coin in the category of issues intended to mark a particular event while remaining legal tender in Algeria. It was struck under the authority of the Bank of Algeria, the institution responsible for issuing the national currency.
