This piece is a 4 Momme silver plate, issued by the Akita domain in Japan between 1863 and 1864. Known as Ginban or F?gin, it represents a local monetary issue from the late Edo period.
The coin is struck in silver with a fineness of 950. It weighs 15.1 grams and its diameter is 37 x 66 mm.
On the obverse, there is a vertical inscription in Japanese characters ?? (shi monme), which indicates its value of 4 Monme. The calligraphy is simple and functional, reflecting the style of local issues from the late Edo period.
The reverse features a central mark (kai) engraved in seal script, meaning "revised" or "certified." This punch mark attests to the official validation of the weight and silver fineness by the authorities of the Akita domain.
This coin was demonetized after 1871, during the national monetary unification of Japan.
