This silver 5 euro coin was issued by Italy in 2018 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Italian State Police Association. Struck in only 5,000 copies, it represents a very limited mintage issue, intended to commemorate this major institutional event for Italian law enforcement.
The coin is made of silver and has a diameter of 32 millimetres and a weight of 18 grams. These physical characteristics correspond to the usual standards of commemorative coins of this denomination issued by Italy as part of its official numismatic programmes.
The Italian State Police Association, whose half-century of existence this coin celebrates, is an organisation representing members of the national police force in Italy, the Polizia di Stato. The association was founded in 1968, a period marked by major social and institutional transformations in Italy. This commemoration reflects the commitment of Italian institutions to honouring the bodies that support and represent the officers responsible for maintaining public order across the country.
The face value of 5 euros inscribed on the coin makes it a legal monetary instrument in Italy, although its numismatic value is naturally linked to its status as a limited-edition silver collectible coin. The issuance of this coin falls under the numismatic policy of the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato, the official body responsible for the production of coins and banknotes in Italy, which regularly oversees the striking of commemorative coins in precious metals intended for collectors and institutions.
