This 5-euro coin was issued by Greece in 2020 and pays tribute to the Hellenic Iris, known scientifically as Iris hellenica, an endemic species of Greek flora belonging to the Iridaceae family. This wild plant, whose presence is closely linked to Greek territory, stands as a powerful symbol of Mediterranean biodiversity.

The coin is struck in silver, with a weight of 17 grams and a diameter of 31 millimetres. It is distinguished by a colourised finish, a technique that involves applying colours to the coin's relief in order to faithfully reproduce the natural hues of the depicted flower. This process highlights the characteristic shades of the Hellenic Iris, particularly the violet and purple tones that define its petals, as well as the botanical details of its corolla.

The reverse of the coin features a detailed illustration of this emblematic flower, while the obverse bears the usual institutional elements of Greek monetary issues, including the face value of 5 euros and the indication of the issuing country.

This issue is part of a series of Greek commemorative coins dedicated to the endemic flora of the Hellenic peninsula and the Greek islands. Greece, recognised for the exceptional richness of its plant biodiversity, has chosen through these issues to highlight rare or little-known botanical species, thereby contributing to their recognition on an international scale.

With its carefully crafted technical characteristics and its particularly elaborate visual rendering thanks to colourisation, this coin represents a typical example of modern numismatic issues combining metallurgical precision with naturalistic artistic representation.
