75 YEARS OF PEACE IN EUROPE
On 8 May 1945 the capitulation of the German army was made official. It is thus the end of the Second World War and thus of more than five years of murderous battles. It was in February 1945 that the Allied forces landed in Germany and forced the Reich's troops into a corner. Thus the latter
surrendered on 2 May 1945, three days after Adolf Hitler's suicide. The capitulation was signed in Reims during the night of 6 to 7 May by General Alfred Jodl, Chief of Staff of the Wehrmacht. The cessation of hostilities was set for 8 May at 11.01 p.m. according to the act of capitulation. At the same time, the German and Allied military commands signed a new act of capitulation of the Third Reich in Berlin. The war thus officially ended on the European continent. The year 2020 celebrates the 75th anniversary of the Allied victory over Nazi Germany.
The flags of the Allied nations of the Second World War are displayed on the face of the coin. These flags include the heraldic codes symbolising the colours. The inscription "75
ans Victoire Victory" appears on the right-hand side and refers to the anniversary of the Allied victory over Nazi Germany. The coin is in the shape of a trapezium in which the V symbolising
Victory formed by the Allied flags, an innovation for the Monnaie de Paris.
The reverse side of the coin depicts doves taking flight and passing through the V of victory. These doves are synonymous with peace. The bird in the foreground has its wings spread out in a V shape, echoing the Allied victory over Nazi Germany. The face value, the year of issue
and the word "RF" are also visible on this reverse.
