RECTANGULAR FORMAT

The great wealth of pictorial art in France for several centuries was the occasion for the Monnaie de Paris to start a new series that pays tribute to the greatest of the masterpieces present in our museums. Currents and influences - Renaissance Baroque Impressionism... - are celebrated. Each year several works are honoured. In 2021 the collection opens with Vermeer's "The Girl with the Pearl" and a new 100 gram silver note.

The face shows Vermeer's famous work "The Girl with a Pearl". The "Museum Masterpiece" stamp that defines this series has been added to the top of the coin and blends in with the painting. At the bottom of the painting, the façade of the Jeu de Paume Museum in Paris, where the work was first exhibited outside the Netherlands 100 years ago in 1921, has been engraved. The sumptuous frame surrounding the work was represented by the engravers of the Monnaie de Paris. The name of the work and the artist also complete the decoration. The year 2021 appears at the top left.

The reverse is common to the series and presents a mixture of views of several major French museums: in the upper left-hand corner is an interior view of the Musée d'Orsay, recognisable by its superb clock. Next to it is a view of the façade of the Louvre visible from the Cour Napoléon (where the famous pyramid is located). Below these two elements is a fresco on the Hôtel Salé which houses the Picasso Museum. The lower part of the reverse shows a view of the façade of the Hôtel Biron, which is the current Rodin Museum. Above it is the famous staircase of the Centre Pompidou. The face value and the words "République Française" are also inscribed on this reverse.
