Simone Veil, a French stateswoman born in Nice in 1927, was deported to Auschwitz at the age of 16 and remained there until the end of the war. In 1974, appointed Minister of Health, she pushed through the law decriminalising abortion, becoming an icon in the fight against discrimination against women in France. The first President of the European Parliament, she was a major figure in the construction of Europe. Minister of State from 1993 to 1995, she subsequently sat on the Constitutional Council before being elected to the Académie française. Following a decision by President Emmanuel Macron, Simone Veil will join her husband in the Panthéon on 1 July 2018.
