The front of the banknote features two major allegorical figures. Ceres, the Roman goddess of agriculture, is depicted holding a wreath of wheat, a symbol of fertility and abundance. Mercury, the god of commerce and travelers, is also present, highlighting the importance of economic exchange. The association of these two divinities evokes the prosperity and wealth of the French nation, based on both agriculture and commerce. The face value, "1000 Francs", is clearly indicated.
On the back, Ceres and Mercury reappear in a different but complementary composition. The iconography continues to highlight the themes of agriculture and commerce, which are at the heart of France's economic identity. The graphics and ornamental motifs are typical of banknotes of that era.
