Theme: Grand Départ du Tour de France - Brussels
Circulation: 120,000 copies in BU (Brilliant Universel)
Brass - 10 50 g - 25 65 mm diameter
This year the start of the Tour de France will take place ... in Belgium. It's not the first time that the great cycling nation has hosted the start of the competition. In fact, it will be the 5th time, the first having been in Bruxelle in 1958, followed by Charleroi and Liège (twice). This year's Grand Départ is an opportunity to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the creation of the famous Yellow Jersey, as well as the 50th anniversary of Eddy Merckx's first victory in the Grand Loop. Eddy Merckx, who won 5 times and is nicknamed the Cannibal, was voted Belgian athlete of the 20th century and best cyclist of the 20th century by the Union Cycliste Internationale.
That's why the Royal Mint of Belgium has decided to dedicate a ?25 coin to the Grand Départ of the Tour de France. Designed by Luc Luycx, the creator of the common face of the euros, this coin is made of brass. It was minted in 120,000 copies, weighs 105g and has a diameter of 25.65 mm. In BU (Brillant Universel) quality, it is offered under coincard. It exists in 2 versions, one Flemish and the other Walloon.
